The good thing about modern boilers is that they have a way of telling you when they have an internal error. As such, when your Potterton boiler has an issue, it will inform you of the same via an error code displayed on the boiler display panel.

As these fault codes are meant to be understood by the boiler engineer fixing the issue, you may have a hard time making sense of the displayed error codes. However, by referencing this article, you will be able to identify the problem with your boiler. And if it is a simple one, you can even resolve it on your own without having to call in a heating engineer.

E20 Faulty central heating negative temperature coefficient (NTC)
E28 Faulty flue negative temperature coefficient (NTC)
E40 Faulty central heating negative temperature coefficient (NTC)
E50 DHW NTC sensor fault (tank boiler) (s.c) or DHW NTC sensor fault (tank boiler) (o.c)
E83/E84/E85/E86/E87 Communication error between the boiler and the room controller
E109 Pre-circulation error
E110 The temperature in the boiler has exceeded tolerable limits, usually caused by a faulty pump, the presence of air in the boiler system, or a tripped safety thermostat sensor.
E118 The water pressure in the primary system is too low
E125 There is a primary circulation error
E128 A flame failure has occurred 12 consecutive times
E129 A safety error due to frequent flame loss
E130 Boiler lockout due to a tripped thermostat sensor
E133 Ignition failure due to a possible gas supply issue
E134 Elapsed time gas valve open, but there is no gas supply
E135 Internal error due to interrupted gas supply
E154 Flow/return sensor test underway
E160 Fan issues due to it being defective or having faulty wiring
E163 DHW NTC sensor fault (tank boiler) (s.c) or DHW NTC sensor fault (tank boiler) (o.c)
E270 Circulation fault resulting in a dry fire
E317 Incorrect power supply frequency
E321 Faulty hot water NTC
E384 False flame detected
E385 Under voltage due to power supply to the boiler being less than 195 V
E430 Temporary water pressure test underway

E92 The combustion test alarm was activated during auto-setting
E109 Poor water circulation in the boiler system
E110 Boiler lockout due to tripped boiler overheat
E117 The water pressure in the boiler system is too high
E118 The water pressure in the boiler system is too low
E125 Primary water circulation fault
E128 The flame was lost during boiler operation
E129 The flame was lost during calibration
E130 Boiler lockout due to tripped flue thermostat sensor
E133 Ignition failure due to faulty detection electrodes or gas supply issues
E135 Internal PCB error
E154 Incorrect primary flow in the boiler
E160 Faulty fan due to it being defective, blocked or short-circuited
E270 Circulation fault resulting in a dry fire

E384 A flame was detected despite the gas valve being off
E385 The mains power supply to the boiler is less than 195V.
