Ideal Boiler Problems and Common Fault Codes

Boilers are like every other machine. Sometimes, they can malfunction. With Ideal boilers, there are common fault codes some of which are easily repaired without the help of a technician. In this section, we look at the most common Ideal boiler fault codes, what they mean and common cures.

C2 Error code

Two fault codes can be displayed on the boiler. Both of them have very similar meanings and in some cases, the fix might be the same. The boiler might show the C2 or C0 fault code.

The C2 fault code means the boiler chip card has an internal error. If the display shows the C0 fault code, it indicates the activation of the boiler chip card was not successful.

The C2 code can be shown if any parts of the PCB have been recently replaced.

Suggested Fix

In some isolated cases like if there are parts of the PCB that have been replaced, resetting the boiler might help to clear the code. If this is not the case, you might need a technician to replace the code and run other diagnostics.

F1 Error Code

F1 error code related to low water pressure in the central heating system. Sometimes the loss of pressure because of not having enough water in the system. The system can also lose pressure over time and display the F1 error code.

Suggested Fix

There’s a simple fix if your suspect the boiler is showing the error code because of low water levels. You just need to add water into the system through the external filling loop. You will need to reset the boiler after filling it.

If the boiler is regularly and frequently showing the error code, the problem might be deeper rooted. There’s a chance there could be a leak in the system. If that’s the case, you need to call in a technician to find the leak and fix it.

F2 Error Code

An F2 error code on the control panel suggests there was a flame loss during operation. The circuit board locks out and displays the fault code as soon as it receives the signal on the flame loss.

An F2 error code can occur if there’s a problem with the flue, fan faults, faulty gas valve, incorrect gas pressure or an incorrect adjustment of the valve.

Suggested Fix

Some of the F2 fixes are DIY. The simplest is topping up the boiler pressure. However, the fault is usually gas related which means it can be dangerous to handle it yourself. It’s best to let a proper Gas Safe certified technician to have a look at it.

F3 Error Code

This is one of the more common fault codes. When it occurs, it’s displayed on the boilers display panel. The code suggests the fan might be having problems.

The range of problems vary. It could be that the fan has damaged or loose connection or it has water damage from a boiler leak.

Unfortunately, the code is not specific so it could indicate a variety of problems which include:

• PCB problems
• Air pressure switch fault
• Fan speed fault

The fault is not dangerous because the boiler locks out after displaying the code. However, if the boiler doesn’t lock out, you should turn it off immediately to keep harmful gases from accumulating inside the property.

Suggested Fix

The cure depends on the diagnosis. In some cases, the connections only need to be re-secured. Some wiring might be required for damaged connections. At worst, you might need a new fan which might set you back a pretty penny.

F5 Error Code

An F5 error points to a problem with the return thermistor. The return thermistor monitors the temperature of the water returning to the boiler after it travels around the radiators and the rails. • Damaged connector to the thermistor
• Faulty PCB
• Faulty NTC return thermistor
• A Difference in temperature that’s too high between the flow and return thermistors

There’s no DIY fix for an F5 fault code. You need to get a technician to find and fix the problem. After the problem is fixed, you can reset the boiler. Be careful not to reset the boiler without having the problem fixed.
